Elephant and Mice

I am pretty sure some of you guys out there heard of this myth that elephants are afraid of mice be it in the form of cartoons or you heard bout it from some discussion. So, in the battle between the harmless naighbourhood fur ball and the enormous potentially lethal wild elephant, who wins? Yea, you gotta be thinking to youself that the elephant definitely is the winner, so DID I. Surprisingly, its the mice.

I caught an episode of Mythbusters on Discovery Channel and they happen to be conducting the experiment on this myth. Sure enough, the mythbusters thought that the results are pretty much confirmed that the elephant would not give a damn bout the mice. So they hid the mice, and revealed it right in front of the elephant while its moving, and it kind of growled, which to me is kind of a human equivalence of cussing “HOLY SHIT!”. It stopped right dead in it’s track and changed it’s bearing immediately. Further testing were made to confirm and reinforce the myth in which the elephant is afraid of mice. Well, I was blown away of course, and I analysed the situation and thought the only thing that harmless innocent fur ball can do to that elephant is to crawl up its long nose which touches the ground and cause some catatrophic tragedy, which is highly unlikely but plausible.

Before you start laughing at the poor elephant for being so afraid of something pathetically small as compared to it’s own size, think about how some people are afraid of bugs and creepy crawlers too. I remember my sister being so afraid of a harmless flying bug exploring her room, leaving her too distressed to do anything unless it was annihilated. Same theory isn’t it? I guess we ought to laugh at ourselves too.
